Addiction is regarded by most as a social problem to be solved with social solutions, i.e. incarceration. But, scientific evidence argues otherwise: addiction is a brain disease. â€Å"The World Health Organization has defined addiction as ‘A state, psychic and sometimes also physical, resulting in the interaction between a living organism and a drug, characterized by behavioral and other responses that always include a compulsion to take the drug on a continuous or periodic basis in order to experience its psychic effects, and sometimes to avoid the discomfort of its absences. Tolerance may or may not be present’† (4). Interestingly though, this clinical condition has both behavioral and social components that need to be attended to, just†¦show more content†¦A common misconception is that the withdrawal symptoms will be more severe for those drugs that are more highly addictive. Though this is not accurate, â€Å"the inherent abuse potential of a given substance is likely to reflect it’s ability to activate this reward pathway,† so that a drug’s â€Å"addiction level† can be seen directly in the mesolimbic reward pathway (2). For example, cocaine, a heavy-hitting drug, does not cause typical withdrawal symptoms when in demand. Instead, more complex and delicate symptoms are felt, but they are not as obvious as the symptoms characteristic of withdrawal. First, there is a mood swing of sorts(the crash), and then an energy plummet (withdrawal), which effects motivation and pleasurable experiences (3). Another example of an addictive substance is nicotine. If we accept addiction as a disease, then nicotine should be considered a drug. Referring to addiction as defined by the World Health Organization, seasoned smokers cannot go long periods of time without a cigarette or they begin to experience withdrawal symptoms: they shake, have headaches, and crave cigarettes. (Long term withdrawal symptoms include a craving for nicotine, irritability, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, restlessness, sleep disturbances, decreased heart rate, and increased appetite or weight gain (4)). Night And Eliezer Eliezer was a young boy when the Holocaust began. He saw his family, his friends, and his fellow Jews humiliated and murdered. This autobiography, Night, was written by Eliezer Wiesel. He wrote about what horrors he saw and went through during this dreadful period in time. The first part of the book is when he was very religious and prays with Moshe. When the German soldiers come into their town the townspeople fear them. But this is when he begins to become doubtful. For the rest of the novel, Eliezer starts to question his God. Eliezer Wiesel was twelve when he first met Moshe the Beadle. At this time in his life, he was a big believer in God. He studied the Talmud during the day and at night he prayed at the synagogue. One day Eliezer asked his father, who was a rabbi, "Can you find me a master to guide me in my studies of the cabbala?"(1) But his father simply replied, "You're too young for that. Maimonides said it was only at thirty that one had the right to venture into the perilous world of mysticism." (1-2) In return to this statement made by his father, he went out to find his own. This is when he found Moshe. Almost every evening, they would talk about God and sit in the synagogue and pray. Moshe became Eliezer's master to show him the mysteries of the cabbala. During these nights, Eliezer said, "We would read together, ten times over, the same page of the Zohar. Not to learn it by heart, but to extract the divine essence from it."(3) Since Moshe was a foreign Jew, he had been taken away to a concentration camp. He had escaped only to be able to tell the townspeople what he had seen. No one believed him. Even Eliezer did not believe his foolish story. But Eliezer could see that Moshe had changed. He no longer talked about God and the cabbala. People thought he was a madman. "What an imagination he has!" people said. (5) People continued to do their daily tasks as if he had not said anything at all. Although Eliezer heard horrible stories from Moshe, he still continued his studies of the cabbala. A while later, Germans were known to be in a town close by Sighet. The optimists thought they would not come to our town though because there are strategic and political reasons why they would not want to leave that town. But, three days later, they were in Sighet. At first, they acted friendly and one even gave gifts to Eliezer neighbor who was housing him. By the seventh night of Passover, the nightmare began. All the leaders of the Jewish community had been arrested. They had rules the people had to obey like wearing yellow star and staying in our house for a certain amount of days, etc. The next thing that came was deportation. The people had to wait on a blazing hot street waiting for their turn to come. Little by little, Eliezer started to disbelieve that there was a God. "Oh God, Lord of the Universe, take pity upon us in thy great mercy," the people said. (17) The night before they left they didn't pray to pass the time more quickly. When they arrived at the first camp, his father and Eliezer were separated from the rest of his family. He heard about people who went to the crematory and the gas chambers. His father started praying. "For the first time, I felt a revolt rise up in me. Why should I bless His name? The Eternal, Lord of the Universe, the All-Powerful and Terrible, was silent. What had I to thank Him for?"(31) Moving from one concentration camp to another, Eliezer saw many more deaths. While at Buna, he witnessed many more deaths and hangings. These uneasy thoughts are most common among parents of children who, incredibly enough, access the Internet with ease in their young age. The growth of the Internet has allowed millions of people the ability to express ideas, opinions, promotions, jobs, and much more to a very large audience quickly and inexpensively. It has the ability to display images and text at the choice of an individual and post it on a home page for full view by the public. This free expression, in some circles, has grown to include "indecent" material or material not suitable for mi nors. Due to this, the Federal government has been in debate about whether or not limitations should be put on Internet use and users. In 1996, the United States Government passed the Communications Decency Act which intended to prohibit the public availability of "indecent" material on the Internet. The CDA's original intention was to pursue minor's access to indecent materials but grew to criminalize constitutionally protected speech, poses problems which should be handled differently from other media, and encompass all citizens regardless of age. That's right: not only are public schools notorious for large classes and limited resources but now some of them are adopting what has always been most dreaded by the youth attending private schools: school uniforms. Â   The very idea seems a bit strange. Agonizing over what to wear to school (and whose logo or face to wear across on your T-shirt) has always been a kind of right of passage for young people. Yet increasingly, that process is being limited on campus. Â   Uniforms were virtually unheard of in public schools 6 years ago. Today 11 percent of schools around the country are requiring that their students don uniforms. (According to a survey of principals conducted in May by the National Association of Elementary School Principals). Â   The reasons for uniforms are almost always the same. Uniforms will decrease crime and violence in schools while improving the behavior of students, say experts. Students less concerned about who is wearing what brand name clothing are less likely to judge their fellow students or to form cliques. Also, they say, uniforms cause school pride to increase. Students feel more united, more connected, and therefore their school becomes a safer, healthier environment; students test higher on standardized tests and their grades improve, proponents of uniforms argue. Â   One thing that does not often get mentioned by adults and experts is the fact that uniforms are now being made by huge clothing manufacturers like DKNY, Esprit, and Bugle Boy. This was to find out if the child had any physical disabilities during her earlier stages of growing and developing. She is able to understand, analyze and follow the directions when given. The researcher noted how effective the child was able to use the English language. She speaks the English Language fluently for a child her age.Many factors though is said to have contributed to this as the mother recalls that during her pregnancy, she read a lot. The child is provided with the proper printed resources and education friendly. The child is also provided with games that will enhance her memory she has both printed and electronically inclined games to enhance her memory. This type of environment enables her to gain the knowledge and necessary skills required to be able to: 1) reason effectively, 2) solve problems effectively, 3)explore the environment. 4) have a good memory.The child was always corrected whenever she makes a mistake. Hence, the child ha s a full advantage of how to speak English language as to Creole which is dominant in her community. If one were to insist that words be used only in their initial sense, one would discourage me from writing â€Å"Chill out,† because I am not alluding to temperature, and the literal meaning of the verb chill is not â€Å"calm down,† but â€Å"make colder.† That’s the point of the post, which argues that, for example, aggravate shouldn’t be required to apply only to making something worse- it’s fine to use it when describing mere irritation. The argument goes that if the restriction is to be taken to its logical conclusion, aggravate should mean only â€Å"weigh down,† because that is its original sense. (The grav in aggravate, you see, is the same as the grav in gravity.) By the same token, the lackluster utterance of â€Å"Awesome† in response to, well, virtually any pronouncement- no exclamation point is necessary, because the comment was likely nothing like an exclamation- is acceptable. On the one hand, this weakening of a word challenges the writer to find- or even craft- a suitable synonym, but it might not be long before the replacement is in turn drained of its strength. That’s why I never write (or say) anxious when I mean eager; the former term patently alludes to anxiety, not anticipation. But I admit inconsistency- using the last word in the previous sentence reminds me that anticipation literally means not â€Å"the state of looking forward to something† but, rather, â€Å"the act of foreseeing.† (Anticipere, the Latin verb from which it is derived, means â€Å"take before.†) Nevertheless, I try to use precise, unambiguous words and will continue to preserve distinctions when possible, and I encourage careful writers to do so as well.
